Eleven years after moving from China to Australia to study mechanical engineering, Qilin Chen signed the contract to buy his very first home in Melbourne.
With his wife by his side and their first child on the way, Chen knew it was a defining moment – one that confirmed his decision to call Australia home.
“I just felt at ease and thought, I’ve got my own home in Melbourne, I’ve got my baby and wife,” Chen said. “Everything I need for a great future is here.”
After graduating from RMIT University in 2017, Chen worked for a year before being invited to apply for a Skilled Nominated visa, which allowed him to stay in Australia permanently.
Chen said building a career here has given him access to a supportive environment, with a competitive salary, a good work-life balance and many opportunities for growth.
“I really enjoy working in Australia,” Chen explained. “Engineering companies are very supportive of personal development and willing to provide resources and assistance to help you grow.”
The desire to provide a better future for his children cemented Chen’s decision to make a life in Australia and he said he looks forward to raising his daughter in Melbourne – a city he loves for its world-class education and vibrant multicultural society.
“I’m happy my baby girl can have a beautiful childhood growing up in this peaceful environment, with access to a good education,” said Chen. “Australia is a truly multicultural society, which will give our children a better understanding of the entire world.”
