As a senior health and safety professional in the steel manufacturing industry, Fran Moreira has worked in four nations across the world – from his birth country of Spain to the bustling city of Dubai.
But it was Australia’s workplace culture and family-oriented lifestyle that finally saw him settle down for good, in a place he intends to call home for many years to come.
“I try to encourage people to come to Australia because it is really good for career progression,” Fran explained. “If people work hard, the pathway for progression is huge.”
Now based in Melbourne, Fran is Head of Safety for a steelmaking company, responsible for the mental and physical health of more than 5000 workers.
“There are many opportunities for skilled workers here, particularly in the health and safety management area,” said Fran.
With a role that gives him a unique perspective on Australian working conditions, Fran declared Australia a global leader in workplace safety and said he encourages workers to consider the benefits of building a career here.
“It’s a great place to raise a family, and there’s a really good balance between work and life,” Fran explained. “It’s also very diverse and respectful. The people are accepting of many different cultures and religions.”
Settling in Melbourne has been a welcome change for Fran’s whole family. They enjoy the open-air lifestyle and often head outside to play sport or ride their bikes.
“I asked my kids which country they prefer living in,” stated Fran, “and they all said Australia.”
